THE OAKWOOD COMMUNITY CENTER AIMS TO CREATE A COMMUNAL AND HOLISTIC SPACE
THAT EMBRACES THE COMMUNITY AND THE OAKWOOD PARK THROUGH THE USAGE OF A
CENTRAL COURTYARD AND A SPIRAL PROCESSIONAL PATHWAY ENVELOPING IT. THE MAIN
FACADE ON CALIFORNIA AVE. IS ACTIVATED THROUGH AN APERTURE-LIKE-FUNNEL, INVITING
VISITORS THROUGH THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BUILDING AND THROUGH TO THE PARK.
THE CENTRAL COURTYARD ACTS AS A NEXUS, DELIBERATELY ALLOWING A TRANSPARENT
RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH FACADE TO INTERACT WITH ONE ANOTHER. THIS TYPOLOGY
ALLOWS FOR A CONTINUOUS TRANSITION ONTO THE SECOND FLOOR WITH PRIVACY AND
A SONIC GRADIENT IS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION.
THE ROOF RESPONDS TO THE FLOORS BELOW BY INTEGRATING A LARGE BUTTERFLY ROOF
ABOVE, COHESIVELY SIMPLIFYING THE FORM. A GUTTER SYSTEM IS LOCATED IN THE FOLD
OF THE ROOF AND AROUND THE COURTYARD TO PREVENT UNWANTED RAINWATER. A PV
SYSTEM IS UTILIZED IN A CHECKERBOARD PATTERN ON THE METAL RAIN-SCREEN PANELS,
EFFECTIVELY HARNESSING HALF OF THE ROOF’S SURFACE AREA TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY.
THE OAKWOOD RECREATION CENTER APPEARS TO BE FLOATING WITH ITS DOUBLE SKIN
FACADE SYSTEM; STOREFRONT GLAZING SYSTEM + OPERABLE LOUVRE SYSTEM; TO EFFICIENTLY
SHADE THE INTERIOR AND PREVENT SOLAR GAIN. THE TREATMENT OF THE
NORTH AND SOUTH FACADES ALLOW FOR THE INDIVIDUAL ROTATION OF EACH LOUVRE
BLADE, WHICH ALLOWS FOR LETTERS TO BE APPLIED SUCH AS OCC. THIS FURTHER FACILITATES
THE CONNECTION OF THE OAKWOOD COMMUNITY CENTER WITHIN THE GRAIN OF
OAKWOOD ITSELF.
