This project seeks to produce a community within Leimert Park through the slicing and
rotation of units. This transformation establishes a transition space that also acts as a
personal courtyard. I was inspired by Tadao Ando’s Azuma House where the organization
of programs is separated by an outdoor transition space.
Privacy and security are ensured by vertical louvers applied to each of the unit’s outdoor
spaces following the same language as the grain of the shipping container’s corrugated
metal. The louvers promote flexibility by allowing the user to rotate, partially or fully remove
them without sacrificing structural stability. This allows the units to transform from
a more privatized space to a more accessible and communal aggregation.
